Premium Friday “WA” Live @ Harajuku offers a unique opportunity to enjoy Japanese traditional musical instruments, which are often a bit hard to approach, in the relaxed atmosphere of OnJapan CAFÉ. Our 3rd Premium Friday event introduces you to the world of “SHAMISEN,” a traditional three-stringed instrument, together with bass!

Reigen Fujii, the youngest ever winner of the title of Japan’s No. 1 Tsugaru Shamisen, will be joined by bass player Shunsuke Yamahira, who has a wealth of experience playing live and recording with numerous artists. They will play a variety of music from traditional folk songs, jazz, and fusion, to rock and original east meets west compositions that span history and genres. You’ll be surprised and excited to see how this traditional instrument generates new musical possibilities!!

You can also try a selection of OnJapan’s delicious drinks including Japanese green and red teas, local craft beer, sake and shochu. Please join us for a enjoyable Premium Friday evening listening to great music and enjoying special drinks with a touch of “Wa” (Japanese style)!

Reigen Fujii
Started learning Shamisen at the age of 12. Within a year he was winning awards at various national competitions. In 2012, he was the youngest ever winner at the National Tsugaru Shamisen Competition held in Aomori Prefecture, the birthplace of Tsugaru Shamisen. In 2014 he formed COALESCE, a progressive fusion band, with which he continues to play today. He was the first person to establish chord theory for the shamisen, with his exceptional technique enabling him to play any kind of scale or rhythm. He has played with various artists including ARASHI, Momoiro Clover Z, His Excellency Demon Kakka, May J, and Kanji Artist Souun.

Shunsuke Yamahira
Started playing a bass at the age of 13. At 22, he joined the band of Shizuo Wada, a former member of the DOWN TOWN BOOGIE WOOGIE BAND, in concerts and recordings. After leaving the band, as well as playing with his own jazz/fusion band, he plays sessions with various artists. He has extensive experience performing at US military bases and supporting pre-production and recording of albums, CMs and BGMs for various artists. He has played with many artists including Dave Hirao, Kazuo Takeda, Hiroshi Fujioka, Mickie Yoshino, Katsuko Kanai and Hiroshi "Monsieur" Kamayatsu.
